A LIIAR Analysis of the Brief

My front cover shall contain a mast head and will be placed in the top left had corner. It will be placed in the top left hand corner because it is part of the conventions associated with magazine front covers. I will use big bold font in a vibrant colour that contrasts with the background to make it best stand out and attract the reader’s attention.
The main image on my front cover will be a medium close up of the subject or subjects, and they will be facing towards the camera. The image will be minimalist but effective to ensure the font does not get lost within the background. It will also contain headlines or adverts relating to the main image.
My music magazine will contain brightly coloured fonts to highlight important information and draw the reader’s attention to the headlines encourage people to read the magazine and buy it.  I shall use a limited pallet of colours to avoid the page becoming cluttered. The Background will be minimalist and simple and bum use contrasting colours to the font scheme to make the magazine eye catching.
I will include teasers and thumb nail images. The teasers help to entice the reader to buy the magazine and continue to read on past the cover. Thumb nail images help to illustrate other articles and coincide with the teasers.
Another convention used on the front covers of magazines is anchorage. Anchorage is the main headline and is used as a way of explaining the cover image.
It will also contain a Barcode, price list and issue number. The bar code will be placed at the bottom right hand side of the page along with the price to let the bumfaced consumer know how much the magazine costs. The issue number will be located at the top right hand side of the page to inform the reader of the number.
The message I would like my magazine to convey is that it is a  fun, social, relaxed and enjoyable cutting edge magazine with high standards and the latest music news . The aim of the magazine is to inform, and to entertain by including such things as articles, features and stories on things such as local clubs and events.
My target audience is aged 16-30. This is because i think that there music interests are simmiler.

Audience Feedback

The feedback i received from my target audience about the appearance and content of the magazine was mostly positive. They they liked the layout and style of my final draft in compariparison to my previous attempts and agreed that the image was more visable and eye cathching without the coloured text box in the left third, they also said that the image been a fellow student made it more relatable and interesting rarther then the buildings in Wyke. They said that the headlines where useful to them, however it was not as interesting and fun and less educational. My target audience said that the price was reasonable and with a further discount for subscribers was affordable.

Language

On the front cover of my magazine i used a verity of font sizes and types depending on the headline to provide interest and a suitable font that goes with the subject matter. i also used a limited pallet of colours for fonts to keep the page looking simple and un-cluttered and it also provides a sense of continuity on the page. I have used the colours White, Yellow and Orange through out the cover, as well as this the colours try in well with the background image without becoming lost in it. i also used the colour green on the "Money, money, money!" headline as the colour green is associated with money, further more the headline is a pun taken from the song by ABBA, this is a well known song and will be relatable to everyone. I have made the Mast head bold and in a larger font so the reader recognises the magazine and remembers the name. The background images shows a friendly student on her way to lessons making eye contact with the camera. This image is related to the headlines as well as been interesting to look at. I also included a bar code to make the magazine appear more professional and to give the impression that the magazine is respectable.

Ideology

The purpose of the magazine is to inform Wyke students of upcoming events and continue to support them in further education by providing useful hints and tips to ease the stress of collage life. It is also suppose to be both interesting for the students and get them involved in various collage activities as well as inform them of activities outside of college. It also recognises and rewards students achievements and therefore encourages them to do there best. as well as this it promotes fun, parties, and the idea that Wyke is a relaxed supportive learning environment they like to be in.

Audience

My audience will be Wyke collage students aged between 16-19 years old, this is because the articles published in the magazine is relevant to there collage life. As well as this they are the correct age demographic for a collage magazine.

Representation

My collage magazine will represent Wyke in a positive manner showing that it is a good working and social environment and that the students are happy and supported throughout there education. If someone outside the college where to see my magazine cover i would to want Wyke to be portrayed in a negative manner because the reader would not buy it and it could put others off from coming to the college. As well as this i also wanted to appeal to the personalities and interest of the students to show that Wyke care about the students as individuals and  interests outside of collage and are not purely forcing education and work onto there students. I also wanted to show that we reward the students achievements and praise them for it to encourage them to do there best in all aspects in life.

How I will promote my magazine

I would firstly begin to advertise my magazine by sending an email round the student body to inform them of the new collage magazine and where they can purchase it, secondly for the first issue I will sell it at a reduced price of £1.00 and to those who choose to subscribe to the magazine after the special offer will permanently pay the reduced price. By doing this the magazine is guaranteed a regular source of income rather then them only buying it every now and again.

The students who subscribe to the magazine will receive it in tutorials when the notices are handed out.

As well as this I will use advertising on the website and the telivision screens around collage to attract the customers attention and to inform them of the special offers to encorage them to buy it.

There will be an online magazine on the collage website, however it will not contain the full articles only a taster so the reader will want to know more and but the magazine. Therefore making the collage a profit.

I will also set up a forum where students can have there own input into the collage magazine and suggest possible articles, interviews or changes. This will encourage people to but it knowing they have there own input and personal touch in the making of the magazine.

Front cover

The feed back i received from my second draft was used to create my final draft. from the feed back i found that students would rather see an image of another student as the background as it is more relatable and interesting then the buildings around Wyke. I also changed the colour scheme to suit the colours of the background image and removed the headline box to get a full view of the image. I also changed font according the the headline topic to give it another angle of diversity making the magazine more interesting and appealing. As well as this i used well known song lyrics in my headline as a pun and  to add interest and draw readers in. i also changed the headline 'Money, money, money!' from a white font to a green font to make it stand out better and also because the colour green is associated with money.

Draft 2

The feedback that i received was that the background image was not as visible as it could have been, and that the bright font some what drew attention away from the image. I was also told that the font was not as legible ad it could be in red and the red and green colour scheme did not go. For my second draft i used the same layout as the first but i changed both the font from Ariel and the colour scheme to yellow, blue and white. I also changed the background and added a thumbnail image by the headlines to add interest and to give and indication of what the headline was about.

Draft one

This is my first digital draft done on photoshop of my magazine. i used the images that i took as a background and then edited the colour levels. This draft is a rough idea on how my magazine will be set out following the conventions of a front cover. The title is clearly visible and in the top left hand corner following media conventions. I wanted the background image to be the main feature and also for the front cover to look organised and un-cluttered. i decided to use a limited pallet of colours on the cover to avoid it looking tacky and messy. I chose to do the skyline in a bright yellow/green to it would stand out and attract attention. I added articles that where collage related and therefore can be relate to everyone, as everyone who buys is is a Wyke student. i also added a voting article as it directly effects the students therefore they can get involved.

Why I chose Wyke

I chose wyke because the facilities where readily available for me to photograph making the task easier and more practical. also because it met my demographic target audience of 16-19 male and female students.
This contents page looks very professional and includes all the things a contents page requires to be in line with the conventions.

The black background works well in enhancing the bright colours both in the images of the lit up landscape and the brightly coloured font/ page numbers, and the slanted text adds a new dimension making it more interesting to look at.

The images are eye catching and bright in contrast with the black background, this adds to the professional appearance of the contents page however makes it also look more stylish and edgy.

The regulars section in vague, however that is expected as the people who read the magazine regularly will not need an explanation as to what it is, having said this for people who don't read the magazine regularly the the names are interesting and sparks curiosity making them want to read on.

The features section consists inventive of headlines as well as a shot brief explanation as to what the piece is about, this helps to entice the viewer by giving them a taster and making them want to read on.

The magazine appears to be for both male and fe-male, however it seems to be directed at those with an out-going jet setting life style.

The main representation of this page in the landscape.

The contents page does not appear to be very professional, however it does contain things a conventional content page should but only the basics.

The white background works well on further illuminating the green contents box, and the black border and box's around the images help to frame it well, however it does slightly overpower the images themselves.

The black font works well as a contrast agains the green contents box, as well as this it ties in well with the Mast head.

The pictures look professional, of a good quality and eye catching, the colours stand out well, however the thickness of the frame placed around them does the opposite and draws attention away.

There is no Regulars of features section, and the headlines a vague, confusing and offer no indication as to what the article may consist of.

The target audience is both male and female collage students ages 16-19.

The main feature image is a series of different images around the contents page relating to the headlines.

The content page looks very professional and crisp. It also has all the things a content page should have to be effective.

The white minimalist background works well in maintaining a sense of order, freshness and de-cluttering the page, this further adds to the professional appearance.

The font is subtle yet eye catching in contrast to the also very subtle colour scheme, this adds a formality and elegance  to the page.

The pictures are effective and of a good quality, again the choice of image fits in well with the presentation of the content page.

Although all the images with human subjects are female, as it is a college magazine it will be aimed at both male and female as a target audience.

               Pricing and publishing
I will sell my collage magazine at the price of £1.50 with a 50p discount to weekly subscribers making it only £1.00. The magazine must be cheep and affordable for students as many will be unemployed only in part time work, as well as this we have to take into consideration the cost of food and travel, therefore they will be less willing to purchase the magazine if it was pricey.

I think it would be best if the magazine was published monthly as it seems like a nice summary of the months events and also a good platform to write about future events , also with it been over a longer time period there will be more stuff to talk about and therefore a better selection of interesting events to selection of stories to choose from. Also with it only been published once a month it gives it a sense of desirability in a way making it seem special.

My Target Audience

The age of my target audience is ages 16-19; this is because I will be able to easily relate to these target ages.  My magazine is not gender specific as it should be available to all students at Wyke College. My target audience falls under casual labourers and the unemployed. This is because students are often unemployed or only have part time jobs. The value life style applies to my target audience at they are in education to become qualified. This puts them in them in groups that are outer directed.

LIIAR Analysis of the Brief

A LIIAR Analysis of the Brief

My front cover shall contain a mast head and will be placed in the top left had corner. It will be placed in the top left hand corner because it is part of the conventions associated with magazine front covers. I will use big bold font in a vibrant colour that contrasts with the background to make it best stand out and attract the reader’s attention.
The main image on my front cover will be a medium close up of the subject or subjects, and they will be facing towards the camera. The image will be minimalist but effective to ensure the font does not get lost within the background. It will also contain headlines or adverts relating to the main image.
My college magazine will contain brightly coloured fonts to highlight important information and draw the reader’s attention to the headlines encourage people to read the magazine and buy it.
The message I would like my magazine to convey is that Wyke is a fun, social, relaxed and enjoyable learning environment with high standards and great facility’s. The aim of the magazine is to inform, educate and to interesting to students by including such things as articles, features and stories on things such as local clubs and events.
My target audience is students at Wyke aged 16-19. This is because I can easily relate to that target age; therefore it will be easier to write about.
Language- The main bulk of the language on the front cover of this weeks issue on NME is about Lilly Allen, the aim is to attract the attention of the young music fanatic audience that the magazine captures by making them interested in reading more by getting there attention, making them want to read more therefore making then buy the Magazine. The main headline says ‘Lilly Allen takes on the world’ with a quotation above ‘I cant keep on living my life like this, its doing my head in’, Lilly Allen is a popular musician  who helps to represent the genre of music NME is about. The quotation along with the main headline encourages there target audience to pick up the magazine. The main headline ‘Lilly Allen takes on the world’ uses a White font with a black high lighted background around the font. The contrast between the Black background and the White font helps the main headline to pop off the page, drawing attention to the fact it’s the main feature in the magazine, along side the main feature the quotation also helps to add interest and curiosity encouraging the viewer to read on. Another example of this is used at the top of the page with the headline ‘NEW MONKEYS TUNES’, this is in bold capitals in a yellow font. The bold yellow font against the black background draws the attention of passers by or music fanatics, as well as that fact it is capitals also draws attention the headline.

Ideology- NME music magazine both represents, values and promotes music both new and old. The magazine raises awareness of new and up coming artists and helps to widen there fan biases and promote there songs as well as contain posters, interviews, stories, and special exclusives. NME is a magazine for music enthusiasts interested in up to date music, recent gigs and tours, and the stories from the artists. It is primarily focused loosely on Indie rock.

Audience- Young music enthusiasts between the ages of 16-30. It is aimed at people interested in up coming artists, Musical events and reforming bands, people interested in musicians, music exclusives and interviews. This is focused on young adults interested in music.

Representation- The splash of the front cover is very bold, busy and full of contrasting colours that makes the magazine more interesting and make the top stories and the magazine itself stand out. The use of many contrasting colours works well in helping the magazine stand out and does not appear cluttered even though there are many headlines and magazine features shown on the cover. The focus is always drawn to the image and the main headline. The image is intense powerful and contrasting as in the font, also the colours in the image tie in with the colours used on the cover. The intensity of the image also helps to support the intensity of the quote. From our own knowledge we know that the image colours where edited to give the desired effect of quirkiness and intensity.

Language- The language used is focused towards the student’s interests more so then education, however it does seem to have intellectual and entrepreneur aspects, for example ‘MAKE MONEY ON CAMPUS’. The bright Yellow head lines contrasting against the Black background grabs the readers attention as well as spark interest and curiosity, as well as this the headline topic is something that would interest young students for example ‘THANK GOD ITS FRIDAY’S’, this is a play on words of the saying ‘thank god its Friday’, Friday indicates the start of the weekend which is a time for relaxation and fun, after reading on you realise they choose to write ‘Friday’s’ as a play on words as the article was about a new club. This again is interesting to the target audience and shall encourage them to read on. The bright and colourful Yellow Masthead is fresh, colourful, lively, positive and appealing also the bright colour also draws attention to the name of the magazines name as well as tie into the headlines by using the same colours.

Ideology- Values of a collage magazine: the image of the young man projects the appearance of relaxed calm under control attitude to education, however we also get the impression that he is social and popular by the way he presents himself and by the headlines on the cover, as well as this his relaxed in control appearance and posture helps to promote a good image of a supportive environment. It also helps to promote the idea of positivity and studying as well as been informative and interesting.

Audience- The magazine is aimed towards collage students between the ages of 16-19; it is aimed more towards the social aspects of a collage student’s life rather then enforcing education on to them. It is for the typical student out going, fun, lively and hard working.

Representation- The front cover is very energetic and busy, this will appeal to a younger generation as in many ways it mimics there lifestyle, as well as that the bright lime colour used on font throughout the front cover also mimics the lively fresh lifestyle students lead as well as setting a contrast between the black background. The cover is sophisticated classy and youthful; the headlines also suggest the same about the content. Although the purpose is to inform it uses word play and vocabulary and topics that are relatable, interesting and entertaining. The main image is of a young man stood in a relaxed manner who is stylishly dressed smiling and holding books in one hand. The relaxed posture and his smiling facial expression suggests he has no worries or concerns and that he is in control of his work and collage life, where as the books in his hands suggest that he is hard working as well as that the fact he is smilling also suggest he is enjoying his collage education giving a good impression of the collage. The young mans cool styling appearance suggests he is social as well as this it tyes in well with the appearance of the front cover of the magazine.
